Josephine, Napoleon’s 1st wife, and Caroline his sister, did not like each other…

… because despite their age differences, they were competing key influences on women and fashion.  Below you can see Josephine’s early Regency style.  That is her daughter Hortense and son Eugene de Beauharnais.

A carefree Caroline is shown just before 1800 in the featured portrait.  Note how these women take the basic “little white dress” and add the Egyptian and Greek influences with the gold and coral jewelry; later cameos into the late Regency with the poufed sleeves and (always real gold!) trim and heavier ornamentation.
