Caroline, exiled to Austria by her brother Napoleon, called herself Countess of Lipona..

.. which was completely made up – an anagram of her previous title of “Napoli”.  She remarried in Florence, Italy, Francesco Macdonald.  They had no children.

She had 4 children through her first marriage to Joachim Murat.   2 went to the new United States, and came back again to Italy and France later in their lives:

  • Achille Murat:  son, Sovereign Prince Pontecorvo and 2nd Prince Murat, married the daughter of Colonel Byrd Willis of Florida and had no children
  • Marie Letitzia:  Married Guido Pepoli in Venice, Italy and became the Marchess of Castiglione; had one daughter
  • Lucien Murat: 2nd Prince of Pontecorvo and 3rd Prince Murat, went to New Jersey and married Caroline Fraser of South Carolina.  They had a son, and returned to France where he was advisor to Napoleon III of the 2nd French Republic
  • Louise Julie Caroline Murat: married Giulio Conte Rasponi in Florence and had children
