Pauline Bonaparte Laclerc Borgese was the only to support Napoleon in the end…

… While Pauline hated Napoleon’s 2nd wife Marie Louise, in the end they put all their differences aside.

When Napoleon’s reign ended with his exile to Elba, Pauline was the only sibling to visit him, and to support him.

She sold her residence to the British Government, and they used it to house the Duke of Wellington.  Today her house is the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Paris.

(portrait: a more sedate Pauline in 1808.  Wearing dark and rich colors was a daring and forward move at that time – which quite possibly led to the use of richer colors and heavier fabrics of the later Regency period.. or.. because she lived outside of France, might have indicated influence from Italy or Saint Dominguan fashions.)
